About this event

Denise Martin is the owner of Seamless Sewing Arts, a modern fabric and sewing studio she launched in 2020 with a simple goal: make quilting and sewing feel fresh, relevant, and irresistible to today’s makers. What started in a small Phoenixville shop has already doubled in size—and isn’t done yet. In fall 2026, Seamless will move (again) into an even larger space, continuing to grow right alongside its community. Denise has been sewing her whole life, learning to make garments from her mother, who worked in New York’s garment district. Quilting came later—sparked by visits with her mother in-law in rural Michigan—and eventually turned into a full-fledged creative obsession after she retired. With a background as a painter and printmaker, Denise brings a distinctly modern eye to everything she does, from fabric selection to programming. At Seamless, she’s built a space where traditional skills meet contemporary style—and where curiosity is always encouraged. In her talk, “Confessions of a Quilt Shop Owner,” Denise shares the real story behind running a modern quilt shop—the surprises, the challenges, and what’s actually happening in the fabric and retail worlds right now. Ever wonder why fabric costs what it does — or what it really takes to keep an indie quilt shop alive? In this eye-opening presentation, Seamless Sewing Arts owner shares the unfiltered truth about five years behind the counter, plus a fascinating deep-dive into the global world your fabric lives in. From cotton fields in India to the printing presses of Europe, you'll discover the remarkable journey every yard makes before it reaches your cutting table. We'll explore what's really happening to independent sewing shops, why your dollars matter more than ever, and what we can all do to keep our beloved craft thriving. Come curious — and leave with a whole new appreciation for the fabric in your stash!
